Something that Sage and I have always done on Christmas Eve is to make Jesus a birthday cake. This year, since everyone stayed and stayed, I was running out of time so I needed to start even though we still had company. Travis suggested that I go ahead so that Kylie could help since she's probably not really been told the true meaning of Christmas the way that my kids have. It was so sweet. Sage told her the whole Christmas story, and it went something like, "Jesus came so you could be free. Free from death, fear, being alone..." I was proud, as usual.
Apparently, this table just screams for kids to sit on top of it. I gave up trying to make them stop.
Mixing it all up.
And then I called our number one boy in to help.
EVERYBODY mix
After it baked and cooled, Pawpaw Spence helped them to ice it. I was on the verge of collapsing. ;) Jk. They all think it's such a sweet tradition that we have, and I was more than happy to let someone else take the reins.
Our finished product
When everyone (finally) left, it was after 8, and it was time to bid fairwell to Cara, Mickey and Rudolph. Sage cried and cried. I felt pretty bad for her, but I was like, "Sage, no child goes to bed crying on Christmas Eve. Who knows? Those elves may drop in sometime before Christmas." So we left them out, Santa's cookies, cake and milk. Notice that Sage put her list (one for her and one for Jaggar) out on the table just to make sure that Santa didn't forget anything.
Then we did what else we always do on Christmas Eve. Travis reads the true Christmas story from Luke 2. This is so important. We love family, food, gifts....but we don't want to get caught up in all of that and not take time to remind ourselves WHY we do these things.
Then I read "Twas the Night Before Christmas." So fun to actually do that on the actual "night before Christmas."
And THEN it was time to sprinkle our reindeer feed on the sidewalk so they wouldn't pass us by!
And it was done. I can't tell you how exhausted Travis and I were at this point! But it didn't matter because SANTA was on the move towards us.
